Mary Jean Hoskins
"Nonnie"
"Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace." The Lord has called His peacemaker, Mary Jean Hoskins, to be with Him.
Nonnie, as most knew her, passed peacefully in her sleep Tuesday morning. She joins in Heaven her husband of 63 years, Walter Hoskins; her father, Commodore "Tommy" Mockbee, mother Sarah Blanche Mockbee; brothers Harley and Harry "Billy" Mockbee; and sister Jacquie Drennan.
Nonnie is survived by her brother Vern Mockbee of Buena Park, California; daughter Jeanine and John Meister of Titusville, Florida; son Thomas Hoskins of Lompoc, daughter Sara and Patrick Sheppard, of Orcutt; and son Matthew and Cindy Hoskins of Orcutt. Nonnie has eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Nonnie was a very caring woman who always thought of her family first. She was born in Toledo, Ohio and graduated from Birmingham High School. Shortly after World War Two, she married Walter and began a family. She worked outside the home on occasion, doing book keeping and tutoring. She also enjoyed taking Spanish classes at Allan Hancock College. In 1989, she and Walter purchased Jet Action Coin Laundry North in Lompoc and later City Appliance in Lompoc. However, most of the time she enjoyed spending time with family. She loved to cook and play the piano and was never happier than when everyone was at the dinner table.
Father John Mayhew will celebrate the mass of Christian burial on Monday, August 30, at 10 am at St. Louis de Montfort Catholic Church in Santa Maria. Interment will following at 12 noon at the Lompoc Cemetery. The arrangements are under the direction of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary. starbucklind.com
