Services for Mary Evelyn Murphy, 99, of Lompoc, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at the Carpinteria District Cemetery, 1501 Cravens Lane in Carpinteria.
Mary Evelyn was born September 11, 1912 in Shelby County Illinois. She was one of 5 children born to O. E. & Janie May Lewis.
At 18 years, Evelyn moved to Los Angeles where she worked for many famous people including Grace Kelly and Jean Ball. She became a beautician, salon owner and worked in this trade for 30 years. She earned the prestigious Helene Curtis "Golden Shears Award" for excellence in her field.
In 1932, Evelyn married her husband of 66 years, Gay R. Murphy. They had six children, and moved the family to Santa Barbara in 1955. They opened Gay's Guest Home where she gave loving care to the elderly community for twenty years.
She was a very hard working woman and an inspiration to all who knew her. She taught us that with hard work and perseverance anything is possible. She was the warmth and sunshine in many of our lives.Up until her death on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 and at 99 years young, she still worked and managed the family's businesses herself. She was an amazing woman.She is preceded in death by her husband Gay R. Murphy; son Richard G. "Nooner" Murphy, and her dog, "Porky".
Evelyn is survived by her children Hannah Coffee of Lompoc, Jerry Murphy of Nipomo, Jim Murphy of Tempe, AZ, June Abbott of Carpinteria, Darlene Murphy of Lompoc, 12 grand children, 21 great grand children, and one great-great grandchild, and her dog, Honeybear.
Evelyn would always say "ah-oo, ah-oo, ah-oo I love you"!!
