Mary Adeline Ostini, a lifelong resident of Lompoc, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2013, at the Comprehensive Care Center of Lompoc. She was 91.
Mary loved to cook and was an excellent baker. Every year she would make dozens of cookies at Christmas time and give them as presents to her family and her many friends. She had a huge collection of recipes and enjoyed sharing them with everyone. Many of her recipes were Portuguese recipes that had been her mother's. Mary was the happiest when she was in the kitchen cooking for her family, that she loved, and her close friends.
Mary's parents were Frank and Mary C. Silva who were from the Azores Island, Pico. She was born in the El Jaro area of the San Julian Ranch on April 22, 1922. Her family farmed there until 1935, when they purchased land in the Santa Rita District of Highway 246.
She married the love of her life, Harry E. Ostini on February 16, 1947. They enjoyed 65 years together. In 1949, Mary and Harry moved onto the Ostini Family Ranch on Highway 246, at what is now called Hapgood Road. Harry's parents, Peter and Maria Ostini, had purchased their property in 1941. Mary and Harry lived and worked on the Ostini Ranch until it was sold in 1978. After selling the ranch they retired to Lompoc and built a house on South Sixth Street near Beattie Park.
Mary worked at Moore's Dept. Store in Lompoc in the grocery section. When Moore's closed their grocery section she continued to work there in the children's department for many years.
Mary had a huge heart and was always doing something for others; cooking for a sick friend or visiting them in the hospital or just helping out in any way that was needed. She will be missed by many.
Mary is survived by her daughter Susan of Lompoc, her son Larry and his wife Anne of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, her granddaughter Jennifer Ostini-Drayton and her husband Dan and their son Zane of Otis, Oregon.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 16, 2013, at 1 pm in the pavilion of the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her name to La Purisima Concepcion Catholic Church or the Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Lompoc.
The arrangements under the direction of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary.
