MARY D. SUMMERS 1914-2008

Mary D. Summers was born June 21, 1914, in Huron, Ohio to Gustavus and Imogene Dauch. Following her 1932 high school graduation in Sandusky, Ohio, she attended one year of nurse's training before moving to California where she graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1937 with a Bachelor of Science degree and became a medical laboratory technologist. While studying at UC Berkeley, she met her future husband, Leroy Summers, a Lompoc native. They were married in Virginia Beach, VA, in 1942, following Leroy's enlistment in the Navy. Leroy and Mary returned to Lompoc in 1948, where she has been an active member of the community for the past 60 years.

Mary was very involved with the First Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon and was active in the Presbyterian Women's Association. She volunteered at the Food Bank, and for many years she and Leroy enjoyed belonging to Cotillion Dance Club. She held a lifetime membership in Daughters of the American Revolution and was a member of the Lompoc Historical Society. She was a bird enthusiast and an avid reader. She had an inquiring mind and never lost her love of learning. Her kindness and generosity touched many lives, and she will be greatly missed by those who loved her.

She is survived by her daughter Jeanne Summers Secrest and son-in-law Stephen of San Luis Obispo. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Leroy Summers.

A funeral service will take place Saturday, November 22, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Julia Leeth to officiate. Private burial will take place at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the First Presbyterian Church of Lompoc, 1600 Berkeley Dr., Lompoc 93436; Marian Foundation Hospice Program, 506 East Plaza Drive, Santa Maria 93454, or the Lompoc Historical Society, P.O. Box 88, Lompoc 93438. Arrangements are in the care of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary.
