Max Allen Jones, 77, peacefully left this earth to enter eternity during the morning hours of May 2, 2007.
Max was born July 23, 1929, the eldest of three sons to Archie and Viola Jones in McPherson, Kansas. He graduated from Canton High School, in Canton, Kansas. He married his high school sweetheart Joetta Ann Evans on June 22, 1949. Joining the United States Air Force in 1948 they spent the next 21 years in service to the country as a Medical Materials superintendent in Wyoming, Texas, Indiana, Iceland and Panama, finally settling and retiring at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California in 1969 as a Senior Master Sergeant. He went on to open Minuteman Medical Supply Company and subsequently spent the next twenty-two years as the Director of Purchasing for Saint Francis Hospital in Santa Barbara, permanently retiring in 1992.
In Max's earlier years he enjoyed hunting, fishing, rodeo and country music. Max also loved football, basketball and was proud that he attended Super Bowl I in Los Angeles, between the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs. Max's later years were spent tenderly cultivating beautiful and fragrant roses for his wife Jo. But "Grandad's" greatest joy was spending time with and preparing barbeque specialties for the whole family.
Max's affiliations included the Sergeant's Association, the Lompoc Elks BPOE #2274, and the American Legion post 221.
His parents Archie and Viola Jones, and his brother Bill Jones preceded Max in death.
Max is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joetta of Lompoc; son and his wife, Larry and JoAnne Jones of Lompoc; daughter and her husband, Karen and Jeff Heath of Santa Barbara, brother and his wife, Jim and Pauline Jones of McPherson, Kansas, and brother-in-law and his wife, George and Doris Evans of Canton, Kansas. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Jennifer and her husband Chris Proffitt, Julia Jones and her fiancé Micah, Jillian Jones, Bailey and Chad Heath, and numerous nieces and nephews all of Kansas.
A private family inurnment service will be held. A memorial Barbeque will be held for family and friends on Friday, May 11, at 3:00 p.m. at the Lompoc Elks Lodge. Western dress in Max's honor is requested.
