Maxine G. Newcomb passed away on November 28, 2022, at the age of 96. She loved God and cared deeply for family, friends, and those in need. She was also "feisty to the end" as one of her friends declared with affection. She was born in Inola, Oklahoma on July 14, 1926, to Abraham and Anna (Golbek) Hanneman. They moved to California when she was two.
Maxine Graduated from Dinuba High School in 1944 and Mount Zion Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1948. She married Vance Newcomb on September 24, 1947, a fact which they had to keep secret until she graduated, as marriage was forbidden for the nursing candidates. They had been introduced by his brother Don and her friend Marylee, who were married earlier the same year. As a couple, they lived in San Jose, San Diego, and Lompoc, California. Maxine worked as a nurse at Script's Hospital, Sharp's Hospital, Santa Ynez Valley Hospital, and Lompoc Hospital District.
She was a Girl Scout Leader in the early 60s, but most of her efforts went into the First Baptist Churches of Clairmont (San Diego,) and Lompoc, where she served as Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School craft director, Guild leader, and American Baptist Women's chairman. San Marcos Baptist Camp benefitted from her volunteer. nursing and craft directing skills for over 25 years. Maxine also worked for more than 25 years with the Community Kitchen, retiring at 82.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vance. She is survived by her 3 children: Yogi Haranandinatha of Kauai, Hawaii, DeEtte Johnson of Lompoc, and Lynn Newcomb (Kathy) of Papillion, Nebraska; 8 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.
Interment beside Vance in Evergreen Cemetery, Santa Cruz. Memorial service: February 18 at 1pm at Lompoc First Baptist Church.
