McLean Elliott Obituary

23 Jan 2011

Brigadier General (ret.) McLean Webster (Mac) Elliott, resident of Lompoc since 1974, died on Sunday, 23 January following a brief illness. He is survived by children Michael W. Elliott (Judi) of Burke, VA; Christine E. Hudson (Ron) of Seattle, WA; David M. Elliott of Muir Beach, CA; daughter-in-law Melanie Chepenuk of Sebastopol, CA; two grandchildren, Michael M. Elliott (Veronica) of Denver, CO and Lauren F. Buttrick (Scott) of Reston, VA; one great grandchild, Lila Holiday Buttrick of Reston, VA and beloved miniature poodle, Suzie III.

He was born McLean Webster Elliott on October 18, 1921 in Grandin, North Dakota. He was the third of the four children of parents Ernest Manley and Florence Tabor Elliott, who made their family home in the rich farm country of North Dakota. Mac attended elementary and high school in Grandin and went on to Chafee Junior College in Ontario, CA and Ohio State University earning degrees in Nuclear Physics. He entered the US Army Air Corps in 1942. He began flight training at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio, earning his Aviator Wings and Commission as a young Lieutenant and qualifying as a bomber pilot in WW II. While on leave from flight training, he met and married Margaret Sarah Severson, then a young school teacher in Grandin. Together they lived to celebrate 64 years of marriage, three children and a life of travel and adventure, including an assignment to Vandenberg Air Force Base, where they fell in love with the Lompoc Valley. They would eventually return to Lompoc and reside there for nearly 40 years. His wife Margaret preceded him in death, passing on 2 April 2007. He was a great father and grandfather, an exemplary military officer, an avid golfer (with 5 hole in ones), a lifelong Republican, a strong supporter of the Lompoc Boys and Girls Club, and a member of the Presbyterian Church of Lompoc. He was a beloved husband, father, and a friend to many and will be missed by his family and all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held in the Lompoc Presbyterian Church, 1600 Berkeley Drive, Lompoc, on Friday, 28 January at 1 pm, followed by burial in the Lompoc Cemetery.
