IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Melvin Henry
Bremer
August 5, 1932 – December 14, 2024
Melvin Henry Bremer has been called home to be reunited with his beautiful bride of nearly 66 years, Marlene, who passed away just two months prior on October 11. Mel was born on August 5, 1932, on the family farm near Dunbar, Nebraska, to George and Sarah (Moyer) Bremer. He told stories about walking through blizzards to school and how he and his brothers played with their pet coyote, Joe. In addition to working the farm, Mel was an accomplished athlete, playing baseball and basketball at Dunbar High School. After graduating high school, he attended the University of Nebraska for nearly two years before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force.
In 1956, while stationed in Washington D.C., Mel met Marlene at Minnie's Mansion, and they immediately knew there was something special. Although he would leave soon to be stationed overseas in Morocco and Okinawa, they kept in touch and reunited, marrying in 1958. They met wonderful friends along the way in Aurora, CO, Wichita Falls, TX, and Vandenberg Air Force Base. After 21 years of service, Mel retired from the Air Force and they settled in Lompoc, CA. He finished his career with Martin Marietta, receiving several acknowledgements for his work. He was a huge fan of Nebraska Football, and his favorite color was Cornhusker Red. He was also an avid golfer, proudly hanging his hole-in-one certificates in his "Barn Cave". He and Marlene traveled or hosted friends to enjoy the game often. Everyone that knew him knows how kind, generous, and dedicated he was to all his family and friends. He also had a great sense of humor that he kept to the end.
Besides his family, his proudest accomplishment was building their family home which holds 50 years of cherished memories. It was always a special gathering place for family and friends, whether it be a large holiday celebration or as he would say, a "two beer" barbeque.
Mel was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene; parents, George and Sarah; and brothers Keith and Don. He will be deeply missed by his children, Kathryn Bremer of Tumacácori, AZ, Karyn (Mike) Griffin of Chesterfield, MO, Kay (Tom) Shelton of Dallas, TX, and Bryan (Stephanie) Bremer of Atascadero, CA; six grandchildren Alex and Kyle Griffin, Jacob and Sara Shelton, Joshua and Brielle Bremer; three great grandchildren Harper, Connor, and Wesley Griffin; niece Kimberly (Steven) Yurisich of Melbourne, Australia; sister-in-law Carole Bremer; and numerous friends and relatives.
A family graveside service will be held on December 27, 2024. Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
We love you so much, Dad. Thank you for everything you taught us and the example you set. Rest in peace until we meet again. "Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let Your perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace."
