Merrill Conn Mawhorter 86 passed away on November 15, 2011.
He was born on January 25, 1925 in Garden Grove, CA to Edwina and James Mawhorter.
He was proud to serve in the US Navy during WWII. He attended Barbering School in
Bellflower, CA and graduated in 1958. He came to Lompoc in the early 60's and
stayed and raised a family. He worked and bought the business Avenue Barber Shop for
48 years and retired at the age of 85 years old. Barbering was his joy of life meeting
different customers and many of them were loyal to him for years. He volunteered at
Lompoc Convalescence Home for 38 years, and enjoyed cutting hair and visiting with his friends at the home. He stopped volunteering at the age of 85 years old amazing. He did continue to walk to the convalescence home to visit people until he passed away. Lompoc
High School football games was his passion on Friday nights. He would attend all the
home and traveled to away games for pass 40 years until the age of 86 years old.
Through his years he would help in fund raisers for special education students they
could go on field trips, need any equipment or classroom supplies. He had a contagious
smile and always wanted to live life to the fullest and cheerfulness. He traveled the
world and loved going on family vacations. His gifts in life telling stories and words of wisdom to anyone he met. We will miss him dearly. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Merrill is survived by his children Marlene (Bob) Perry, Durham, CA, Brent (Sue) Mawhorter Lompoc, CA, Kathy(Bob) Cypress, CA, Marsha Bancroft, Utah, 14 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 5 great, great grandchildren. His sisters Gracie Weaver San Dimas, CA, Ruth Sands, Upland, CA, Junie Rogers Beaumont, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his wife Minnie in 2004; brothers Robert, Richard and Elton
Mawhorter.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday January 14, 2012 at 1 PM at the Trinity
Nazarene Church Lompoc. Military service at the grave site, and reception at the Lompoc Veterans Hall with food provided.
