Obituary

Michael John Burke, born to Mary and John Burke on August 27, 1970 at Wurtsmith AFB, Michigan, went home to the Lord peacefully in his sleep on Monday, August 29, 2011.

Michael attended La Purisima Concepcion School in Lompoc and graduated from St Joseph High School, Santa Maria in 1988. Michael graduated from the Allan Hancock College Fire Academy and began his career with Lompoc City Fire Dept as a Reserve Firefighter, Vandenberg AFB Fire Dept as a civilian firefighter, Montecito Fire Dept and finally, the Santa Barbara County Fire Dept. for the past 18 years. Michael progressed as a Firefighter- Paramedic, Engineer-Inspector and then as Captain at County Station 21 in Old Orcutt. During the Jesusita Fire in Santa Barbara, Michael's crew was the first on scene and last to leave. Michael loved being a firefighter and respected all of the firefighters he worked with these past 22 years.

As a dedicated father, he was very proud of each of his children. Michael volunteered as a football coach with the Lompoc YFL for many years and with the Cabrillo Freshman football team the past two years. Everyone knew he was an avid New York Yankees fan.

Michael was a loving son, father, husband, and friend to many. He always found time to look out for and care for those in need. On many occasions Michael visited with terminally ill firefighters, brought meals to families of deceased members and always had a kind word for those needing to hear one.

Michael is survived by his parents, Mary and John Burke, his sister and brother-in-law, Cara (Burke) and Michael Sims, his wife Teri , his children Paige, Patrick and Devyn, granddaughter Bailey, his nephews Sean and Raymond, and niece Ryenne.
