Obituary

Nancy Ann (Wurster) Hogan passed away on March 28, 2024, in Lompoc, California.

She was born at home on February 8,1938 in St. Marys-Auglaize County, Ohio, to Leona and William Wurster.

Nancy remembered wanting to be a teacher from the moment she saw one of her elementary school teacher's grade books with all the names, assignments and grades neatly logged on the pages.  Her love affair with record keeping meticulous logging and #2 Ticonderoga pencils continued until the day she died.

Nancy graduated from St. Marys Memorial High School in 1957.  With encouragement and support from her beloved teacher, Miss Frey, Nancy went on to win a full ride state scholarship to Bowling Green State University and earned her bachelor's degree in education.  She began her teaching career at East Elementary in St. Marys, the same elementary school she attended as a child.

After seeing an advertisement in 1962 that California was seeking teachers, Nancy moved to Lompoc and became a teacher with Lompoc Unified School District.

She met Jerome "Jerry" Hogan, a career firefighter with the Federal Civil Service Fire Department at Vandenberg Air Force Base.  They married in August of 1963.  They had two boys, Tim and Mike.  Nancy was always involved and supportive in her sons' activities, lending anything from her home for theater productions Tim was doing at Lompoc High and supporting Mike's sports teams.

Nancy earned her master's degree in education from University of California, Santa Barbara while teaching and raising her two boys.  She was a dedicated educator and reading specialist with the "Charlie Brown Club", a program to assist children with reading challenges.

After over 30 years of profoundly effecting the lives of countless children in Lompoc, Nancy retired and enjoyed volunteering with the Lompoc Museum at the Artesia school, doing genealogy, ushering for PCPA and Bounder RV camping all over North America with Jerry.

When her grandchildren came along, Nancy spent many afternoons making sure they got snacks, helping with homework, and often drove them to and from team practices and rehearsals.  Only surgery would keep Nancy from attending awards ceremonies, games and performances. She treasured her Grandkids beyond measure.

Nancy is survived by son Tim and wife Abby, grandson Satchel, son Mike and wife Linda, grandchildren Jack (wife Catie) Emily and Dylan, many beloved nieces and nephews & cousins in Southern California, Ohio, Iowa and Idaho, many foreign exchange students and her chosen Lompoc family, Pat & Jay Jure and their children, Jaimee, Ceslie, Brian, Michelle and Gus.

A Celebration of Life will be held Friday April 12, at 11am in the Starbuck-Lind Mortuary Chapel.  A reception will follow at the Elks Lodge #2274 in Lompoc.  In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lompoc Museum-Artesia School Museum 200 South H Street Lompoc, CA 93436.
