Nancy Welbourn's life on earth ended peacefully on February 12, 2008.
Nancy was born on December 17, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan, to James and Evelyn Monaghan, and was the youngest of three children. She enjoyed a long career as a dental hygienist in dental practices across Northern & Southern California, and Northern Arizona. Nancy was very involved in the lives of her children, becoming a Girl Scout leader, volunteering in the school, and keeping everyone busy with activities.
In 1983, the family moved to Lompoc, California, due to a job opportunity for her husband, John. Nancy quickly made numerous friends through Bethany Lutheran Church and her new job as a dental hygienist for Dr. Jeffrey Nelson. Nancy loved living in Lompoc and knew that they would retire in Lompoc.
After briefly working as a dental hygienist, she found new work teaching GED classes to women inmates at the Elmwood Facility in Milpitas, CA. Nancy also continued her mission of working with foster youth by becoming trained as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) worker.
Nancy occupied her time caring for both their mothers until they recently died. Nancy had increasing difficulties with her health with breast cancer finally taking her life.
Nancy will be remembered for her keen sense of humor, which sometimes got her into trouble! She also had a creative streak, and made dozens of memory books for her children, her husband, mother, her CASA child, and many others. Nancy is survived by her loving husband of 39 years, John; daughters, Laura (Oxnard) and Amy (Santa Barbara); sister, Mary Monaghan (Tucson); and brother, Mike Monaghan (Turlock), and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves a trail of foster children and foster grandchildren too numerous to mention by name.
In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that donations be made to the Convalescent Care Center in Lompoc.
A memorial service to celebrate Nancy's life is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 20, 2008, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Lompoc, 135 S. "E" Street.
Cremation arrangements are by Starbuck-Lind.
