Nels Richard Lund
Golf Professional
Nels was born December 11, 1929, to Nels and Clara Lund of Richfield, MN. Nels enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1948, and was discharged with a disability. He followed his sister out to California in the mid-1950s and settled in the Los Angeles area where he met and married the love of his life, Janet Peters.
Nels worked briefly in the hardware business before becoming golf pro at Woodland Hills Country Club. In 1975, he and Jan moved to Lompoc, where Nels became the head golf pro at the Village Country Club. As a professional, Nels enjoyed teaching. He particularly enjoyed working with the junior golfers helping them to improve their skills and learn the etiquette of golf. After his retirement in 1984, Nels acted as president of the Junior Golf Association and continued to work with the boy's and girl's golf teams until recent health issues limited his involvement. Jan and Nels also owned
and operated "Janel's," a popular gift and trophy business in Lompoc.
Nels is preceded in death by his wife Jan, his parents Nels and Clara Lund, his older brother Norton Lund of Richfield, MN, and his faithful companion Peanut. He is survived by four sisters, Mary Lou Eichhorn of Novato, CA, Eleanor Hummel of Hibbing, MN, Donna Jahnke (Bob) of Richfield, MN, and Joyce Swedean (Dick) Eagan, MN. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews. In addition he leaves behind a wonderful group of friends and neighbors.
A special thanks to the caring staff at the Comprehensive Care Center in Lompoc for Nels' care since November 2011.
A celebration of life will be held at The Sage Restaurant at Village Country Club on Wednesday, February 19, at 12:00 noon.
