Betty was born in Lobelia, West Virginia on January 25, 1924 and was the youngest of eleven children born to J. Lovic and Georgina Vaughan.
She grew up in West Virginia and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1944. Betty married John M. Coleman, her husband of 70 years, in 1946.
The couple moved to California in 1951, and Betty was a community volunteer in Redlands, Sacramento, and Torrance. In 1971 John and Betty settled in Lompoc, where she was active with many service organizations including Meals on Wheels, PEO, and Welcome Wagon. In 1985-1986 she served as BPOE 2274 Elks Ladies President.
In 1980, Betty joined Lompoc Alpha Club and was later best known for her involvement with the Alpha Club Flower Show and her award-winning flower arrangements: she was the recipient of three Sweepstakes prizes, five Best of Shows, five Best Miniature awards, and numerous First Awards and additional ribbons.
Betty also taught workshops on miniature and tabletop floral arranging, was selected as a judge, and served as Chairman of the 71 st Annual Flower Show.
She was predeceased by her husband John in 2016, and is survived by daughters Sharon O'Neal (Daniel) of San Diego, CA, Rhonda Coleman (Ralph Emerson) of Bend, OR, grandchildren Katie O'Neal Sherrod (Bryan), Daniel G. O'Neal III (Ruby), and Michael O'Neal (Tara) and three great grandsons and three great granddaughters.
At her request, no funeral services are planned. Contributions to the Lompoc Alpha Club are welcome.
