He met his future bride, Susan Holsinger, a Navy Nurse, and they were married in her hometown of Irwin, Pennsylvania on November 26, 1966, which was her parents' 24th wedding anniversary. Their daughter, Kristi Sue, was born on October 27, 1970. They later moved to Carpinteria, and, in 1998, moved to Lompoc, California where they intended to retire.

Nils was a man of many interests including photography, astronomy, and boating. Nils had several ski boats, including the Sue Anne. Later, Nils bought a 41-foot motorhome, a Monaco Windsor diesel pusher, and pulled a Chevy View. They traveled across the country several times and enjoyed visiting friends and family.
