ODIS RAY HOWELL "SUNNY" "POPO"
1935-2008
Odis Ray Howell, known to those who know and love him as "Sunny" and "Popo," passed away Saturday, July 19, 2008 in Lompoc at the age of 72. He was born December 11, 1935 in Roff, Oklahoma to Douglas and Fannie Howell. He was raised and educated in Roff and came to Lompoc at age 15.
Odis was employed by Johns-Manville for 45 years, working as a bulldozer operator for the last 34 years. He loved antique cars and was a member of the Lompoc Antique Auto Club. In his lifetime he owned over 250 antique cars, his favorites being a '54 Chevy pick-up and a '50 Chevy Super Deluxe. He was also a past member of both the Moose Lodge and the Elks Lodge. Odis was a kidder and loved to tell jokes. He was a silly, good-natured man who made a lasting impression on everyone he met – he just loved to make people laugh. He was a devoted husband, father, and family man and took care of everyone in his family. He doted on his grandkids and attended all their sporting events. He was the best Grandpa ever!
He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Shirley Howell of Lompoc, daughter Linda Joyce West of Lompoc, daughter Barbara Sue Smith of Pine Mountain, GA, stepdaughter Donna Belluz and husband Joe of Lompoc, stepson Gale Wayne Greer of Lompoc, sister Georgia Renwick of Selah, WA, grandchildren Stacy West, Anthony Howell, Melissa Elliott, Yvonne West, Erica Howell, Danny Kiple, Jessica Swanson, Jonathan Smith, Sharla Luxton, Bryan Belluz and his wife Danielle, Jeffrey Belluz, Shelby Mitchell, Sydney Greer; five great-grandchildren and two on the way, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Douglas and Fannie Howell, first wife Gloria Howell, son Johnny Ray Howell, daughter Doris Ann Howell, brothers William "Pete" Howell, Alvin "Bill" Howell, Earl "Moe" Howell, James "Jack" Howell, and his beloved pet rabbit, Snickers.
Visitation will take place Tuesday, July 22, 2008 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Starbuck-Lind Mortuary. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Starbuck-Lind Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Duane Armstrong of Trinity Nazarene Church to officiate. Burial will follow in the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.
