Obituary

Funeral services are scheduled to be held on June 1, 2011 at 10:00 a.m., with a viewing scheduled one hour prior to the service starting at Starbuck-Lind Mortuary, in Lompoc. Burial will follow at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.

O'Henry Hilley passed away quietly on May 25, 2011 at his home, with his family by his side. He was 91 years old, and lived a long productive and giving life. He was born on January 27, 1920, in Sentinel, OK to his parents, Frank Marion and Mary Sam Hilley. He worked on the family farm, with his older brothers, Travis and Luke in Hobart, OK, while growing up.

After graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Army, in October 1942, where he was dispatched to the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He finished his tour of duty on November 1945. He took up the art of bricklaying, after being honorably discharged from the Army. He became a master bricklayer, and expanded his craft to building brick chimneys and fireplaces.

He then moved to Camarillo, CA in the early 1950's. This is when he met his future wife, Mildred Koskimaki, and was then married on June 6, 1953. The bricklaying business continued to thrive, and then opportunity came his way. In 1957, he was informed by the Army Corps of Engineers that new building was occurring at Camp Cook, now known as Vandenberg Air Force Base. He then moved his family to Lompoc in 1958.

Over the past 50 years, he was the masonry contractor that built Lompoc's first shopping center on North H Street, and also building shopping malls throughout Central and Southern California. He built 900 homes in Lompoc, as a general building contractor. He had a philosophy in helping first time home buyers purchasing their first home.

O'Henry is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mildred, sons Charles (Ronie), and Timothy, grandchildren, Victoria Hilley, Timothy John Riley H, Tatiana Riley, Jonathon Riley, great granddaughter, McKenna Hilley, and sister, Genieve Wald.

He was predeceased by his father, Frank, his mother Mary Sam, his son, Patrick, daughter, Ann, brothers, Travis, Luke, Joe, Sam, and Garvin.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his name can be made either to The Alzheimer's Disease Fund, P0 Box 1897 in Merrifield, VA, Native American Rights Fund, P0 Box 992 Boulder, CO, or the local charity of your choice.
