ORVILLE J. HOWELLS
Orville J. Howells, 83, died on Friday, February 21, 2009, at Lompoc Valley Medical Center.
Mr. Howells was born in Burlington, Iowa, March 25, 1925. He entered the Air Force in April 1943. He retired of March 1971 after 28 years service as a pilot, staff officer, and commander. Flying actively until his retirement, he was a command pilot with over 10,000 hours flying time. His decorations included the Distinguished Flying Cross, three Air Medals, Meritorious Service Medal, five Air Force Commendation Medals, plus numerous campaign ribbons and battle starts from WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam.
Orville was a graduate of the Air Command and Staff College and the Air War College. He also held a bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska and master's degrees from George Washington University and Chapman College.
Following his military service, Mr. Howells was employed as an Assistant Dean at Allan Hancock College. He was also a freelance writer and an outdoor columnist for the Lompoc Record (formerly the Lompoc Valley News).
He was past president of the Rotary Club of Vandenberg Village. He had also served as an officer, director, or member of many organizations, including the Air Force Association, Bethany Lutheran Church, Boy Scout Council, Lompoc Barbershop Chorus, Lompoc Bassmasters, Lompoc Kennel Club, Lompoc Sportsman's Association, LOVARC, Tri-Counties Association for Developmentally Disabled, Rainbow Plaza, Retired Officers Association, Vandenberg Aero Club, and the Saddle Club.
Survivors include his son Stephen of Santa Cruz, son Randall of Santa Barbara, daughter Stacy Taylor of San Diego, brother Donald of Mission Viejo, grand Max Taylor of San Diego, and 5 great grandsons.

Memorial services will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church, 135 South E Street, Lompoc, on Sunday, March 1, 2009, at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethany Youth Group.
