Peter A. Dullea passed away on October 26th, 2017. He was 71. He was born on September 11, 1946 to William Verner and Doreen Cook. Peter was a true Santa Barbara original, spending his youth running wild in the coastal foothills and surf and everywhere in between. In his childhood he attended Laguna Blanca School and had many adventures as a Camp Lorr camper. He graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara, then went on to graduate from California Western School of Law in San Diego. Peter began his career as an attorney in Riverside in 1978, then transitioned to the Santa Barbara County Public Defender's Office. He worked in private practice for several years as a criminal defense attorney, but ultimately returned to work for the county and retired in 2008. In retirement he pursued his passion for nature and worked as a seasonal campground docent in the wildernesses and mountains all over North America. While at home in California, he volunteered his time with the Cachuma Lake Nature Program where he taught children about the local flora and fauna. He was also an active member of the Audubon Society and contributed to conservation efforts for the California Condor and other endangered species. He was a proud and devoted Grandfather who loved spending time with his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his outrageous sense of humor, his non-judgmental and benevolent heart, his love of nature, and his love for his family and friends. Peter is survived by his daughter Emily and her husband Adam, and his daughter Elsie, as well as four grandchildren; Aiden, Patrick, Hallie, and Maddie. He is also survived by his friend and ex-wife Charlotte, as well as his stepfather Robert Dullea and wife Susan, and his stepmother Mel Verner, and his siblings; sister Darcie and her husband Lyle, brother Mark, and sister Dee Dee, as well as nieces; Ashley and her partner Marten, Chelsea and her husband Tobias, and great nieces; Larkin, and Malou. Peter also leaves behind many close friends at the Santa Barbara County Public Defender's office and Sheriff's Office, as well as many friends he has maintained relationships with since childhood. Peter moved in so many circles and touched so many lives, his footprints and treasured memories can be found all over the Central Coast and beyond. He will be missed.
