IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Phyllis Maxine
Anderson
December 19, 1925 – December 18, 2023
Phyllis Maxine Anderson was born December 19, 1925, in Lompoc, California. She was the eldest daughter of Veril and Gertrude Campbell. She passed away on December 18th at 97 years old just hours before her 98th birthday.
Phyllis grew up on a dairy farm just outside of town on Campbell Road. It was here that she learned the work ethic that would carry her throughout her life. She attended the local schools and excelled in music and business. Phyllis graduated from Lompoc High School in June, 1944. The day after graduation she married her neighbor and sweetheart, Kenneth Ray Anderson. They were married for 67 years until his passing in 2011.
Phyllis did a correspondence course in business that began her love of bookkeeping. In the early years of marriage, she worked at Surf railroad station and then began a 37-year career as the head bookkeeper for Moore's Department Store.
She was prominent in the Lompoc Valley throughout her adult life. She belonged to various clubs including the Lompoc Rebekah Lodge, Native Daughters of the Grange, Credit Women International and Woman Chamber of Commerce (just to name a few). She was awarded Business Woman of the Year and Credit Women Boss of the Year twice.
Phyllis enjoyed many hobbies. She was in a bowling league, played cards several times a month, loved camping, traveling and was an incredible cake decorator; especially wedding cakes. She loved Christmas and making homemade candy which she shared with some lucky friends and family. Since Ray was a baseball player, she got to know the game well and continued to watch pro games well into her 90s. She knew the names of players and managers and had opinions on their skills!
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ray, son-in-law Fred Hayes and her brother Kenny Campbell. She leaves behind her children Susan Hayes of Lompoc, Darrell Anderson (Susan) of Prescott Valley, Arizona, and Judith Courtemanche (Wayne) of Whitney, Texas along with nine grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and her siblings Jimmy Campbell and Donna Starbuck.
The graveside funeral services will be at the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at 11am followed by a reception.
