Phyllis Wikoff Smith was born on a farm near Bentonville, Ohio. The second child of four born to two educators, James and Lucille Wikoff.
In World War II she served as a radio operator with the 8th Air Force in England and in Germany. During the war she met Ernest Smith, a young marine whom she later married.
She left the service in 1945, but Ernest made a career of the Marine Corps. They moved often and raised their small family in North Carolina, Virginia, New Jersey, Ohio, Colorado and eventually California.
She was a school teacher, a Lompoc city librarian, a guide at La Purisima Mission and she loved performing on the piano and ukulele.
She did volunteer work for Meals on Wheels, the PTA, La Purisima Mission, and her church, First United Methodist Church of Lompoc.
Phyllis Smith is survived by sister Treva Potts of West Union, Ohio, son Jeff Smith of San Miguel, California, daughter Gwen Taylor of Concord, California and son Greg Smith of Port St. John, Florida. She had five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held at the Starbuck-Lind Mortuary Chapel on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at 1pm. Internment to follow at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.
