Vigil services for Refugio Gonzales, 81, of Lompoc will be 7 p.m. Monday, April 28, 2008 at the chapel of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday at La Purisima Catholic Church with Rev. Tom George officiating. Burial will follow at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.
Refugio was born in El Paso, Texas on April 29, 1926 to Alberto and Maria Guevarra Gonzales. "Cuco" was raised in Lompoc and moved to Bodgers with his family. On July 11, 1944, he joined the United States Army and earned numerous medals to include the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. Upon completion of serving his country, he was honorably discharged on August 17, 1946 and hired on with Johns-Manville where he retired after 43 years of dedicated service. "Cuco" spent his leisure time being the family "handyman". In his early years, he enjoyed deep sea fishing, going camping, hosting barbecues all while spending time with his family. "Cuco" always enjoyed a good game of pinochle with family members, and most of all, he loved singing his hymns to his grandchildren.
"Cuco" was surrounded by his loving family when the Lord called him home on April 22, 2008.
He is survived by Amy, his devoted wife of 46 years; sons, Refugio (Sonya), Lencho, Daniel Edward (Sandra), and Andrew (Denise) Gonzales; daughters, Eva Maria "Suzie" Gonzales, Theres (George) Barlow, Rene (Carlos) Quintero, Sandra Lee (Alfonso) Aguirre, his "Princesses" Pamela and Marissa; grandchildren, Judy, Monica, Maria, Maria Luisa, Michael, George, Daniel, Carlos, Rosa, Jose Luis, Vicente, Ernesto, Jessica, Tricia, Pedro, Jesse, Daniel, Maribel, Christopher, Melissa, Nicole, Justin, Erica, Lorenzo, Nicholas, Carlos, Isaac, Analeeya, Daniel, Samantha, and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews; and sisters, Josefina (Greg) Salcedo, Dolores Lira, and Jenny (Isidro) Morales. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Lorenzo and Albert and sister, Francis.
Visitation hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the mortuary.
