Gunst, Richard Austin (Retired USAF)
Dick Gunst passed peacefully at his home on February 24, 2017 at the age of 88 after bravely battling cancer. All Dick ever wanted to be was a military soldier. He joined the United States Marine Corps at age 17, requiring his Mother's approval and ultimate signature. After a tour with the US Marine Corps, he attended Fordham University and became an active member of ROTC. Upon graduation, Dick was awarded Outstanding Military Graduate. With this distinction, he earned a regular commission in the United States Air Force where he had a long and successful career as a Flyer and Missile Man. Dick is loved and admired by his wife Valerie, 3 children (Chris, Melissa and preceded in death Capt. Stewart H. USMC), extended family members, and countless special friends.
A funeral Mass will be held at La Purisima Catholic Church, on Thursday March 2nd at 10 am, followed by a graveside service at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Assisted Home Health & Hospice Foundation 72 Moody Ct. Suite 205, Thousand Oaks, CA 91360, in memory of Dick Gunst. Arrangements entrusted to Starbuck-Lind Mortuary, Lompoc CA.
