Richard Thomas McGinty, 92, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2026. Those who knew him have described him as an extraordinary man who had unwavering integrity, quiet strength, and a generous spirit. A friend once said, “When you called Dick because you were in trouble, he didn’t ask why. He asked, “Where are you?” He was a loyal friend, trusted mentor, devoted husband, and someone whose character left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to have known him.

Richard was born on September 15, 1933, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, to Hugh and Helen McGinty. Following high school, he proudly serviced in the U.S. Naval Air Force during the Korean War from 1952 to 1956. After his military service, he attended Rutgers University and Michigan State University while raising his young family.

Richard began his career as a city planner before moving to California, where he joined TRW. He later became Director of the University of Southern California’s Center for Multidisciplinary Educational Exercises (COMEX), where he led groundbreaking work in educational simulation and curriculum development. Under his leadership, COMEX gained national and international recognition, and he received USC’s prestigious Justin Dart Award for Academic innovation.

In 1983, Richard married Jane Sandbom, beginning a wonderful partnership that lasted 42 years. Together they built a life filled with travel, laughter, family, and service to their community. After retiring to The Alisal Ranch in Solvang, Richard enjoyed golf, serving as President of the Men’s Club, where his creativity, calm demeanor, and gentle humor earned him many lasting friendships. Richard was preceded in death by his children, Teresa, Daniel, and Andrew.

He is lovingly survived by his wife, Jane; granddaughter Amanda Wilhoit and great-granddaughter Frankie; grandsons Daniel, William and Richard McGinty; stepchildren Jason Sandbom (Lynn) and Kristopher Sandbom (Trisha), grandchildren Sara Sandbom, Kelly Halvey (Tal), Alex Sandbom, Tracy Maglinty and their families.

A Celebration of Life will be held on September 12, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Loper Chapel in Ballard. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend.
