Robbin Matthews passed away peacefully at home in Lompoc, California on December 25, 2014 in the arms of his wife, Audra Colquitte-Matthews.
He was born on November 16, 1957 in Detroit, Michigan to the proud parents of Henry Matthews and Eunice Coleman.
Robbin was truly an exceptional man; a man of honor and great integrity who deeply loved his family and made great efforts to provide for them, ensuring their comfort and well-being. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, son, brother and friend…. with a "heart of gold."
Those who had come to know Robbin, considered him a "jewel of a person" and a true gentleman. Robbin, a highly respected business man, community leader and philanthropist, was an extremely compassionate, giving and caring person; always there to extend a helping hand or share words of encouragement to all he knew. He loved people and was committed to giving people "the benefit of the doubt." He was a man of great wisdom, demonstrating genuine concern for others; considered a loyal confidant and trusted friend. Humble with an excellent work ethic, he had strong Christian values and strived to live by the golden rule, "treating people with fairness and respect", as he would want to be treated. He had a beautiful smile and infectious laugh often greeting those he met with a warm handshake, pat on the back or embrace. At times considered reserved and quiet, until you really got to know him and those who genuinely did, often witnessed his uncanny wit and charm, eliciting a laugh with his unexpected humor as he shared fascinating stories of his Michigan State days. This included his admiration for all things Spartans and his unwavering loyalty to the Detroit Lions despite their less than stellar track record. He could be caught bellowing out many songs from his favorite group Earth Wind and Fire. Many also knew of his bold declaration of having the best and the baddest Afro "back in the day" and vowing never to cut his hair.
He graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting, and was a Certified Public Accountant; working as an auditor at Coopers and Lybrand, Wayne State Community College and Ford Motor Company in Detroit. Years later he moved to Lompoc where he operated and owned Lompoc Valley Ford for several years.
He was a member of the Unity Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan and often attended Grace Temple Missionary Baptist and True Vine Baptist church in Lompoc until his illness prevented him from doing so.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife, Audra Colquitte-Matthews, his daughter, Lauren Matthews and his mother and stepfather, Eunice and Wesley Perry, his sister, Angela Perry, brother-in-law, Thornton Berry II, brothers Cedric Perry, Demetrius Perry and sister-in-law Kim Perry.
He also leaves precious memories with his sister in law, Dana Laughlin-Colquitte and brothers-in-law, Malcolm Colquitte, Anthony Edwards and Darren Laughlin and a host of loving cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and close friends who loved Robbin as a brother.
He was preceded in death by his older siblings, brother, Tony Clark and sister, Vicky Lane Clark and his aunts, Grace Kemp, Ruth Waters, Elizabeth Blackwell and Mildred Johnson, whom he treasured and adored.
The visitation will be Tuesday, December 30, from 5-6 pm at Starbuck-Lind Mortuary. The funeral service will be Wednesday, December 31, at 11am at the Grace Temple Missionary Baptist Church, 201 South H Street in Lompoc. The interment will be on Saturday, January 3, 2015 in the Grand Lawn Cemetery in Detroit, Michigan.
Robbin will always be remembered and forever hold a special place in our hearts. We love you - rest in peace our beloved.
