Robert H. (Bud) Schuler
1922-2008
Robert H. (Bud) Schuler, aged 86, passed away on Oct. 1 at the Lompoc Skilled and Rehab Center in Lompoc, CA. Robert Harold Schuler was born Jan. 17, 1922 just outside Laurens, IA on his family's farm. He was the youngest son of Paul and Nina (Gatrell) Schuler. He joined brothers Francis and Donald. Bud began his education in Ware, then moved to Laurens when his family moved to town after losing their farm in the Great Depression. He graduated from Laurens High School in 1938. Here he was a championship basketball player. He remained passionate about basketball all through his life.
Bud moved to California in 1940 to live with his brother Frank and his family. He loved the California weather. He worked at Convair before joining the Army Air Corps 87th Depot Repair Squadron. He was stationed in Texas, North Africa, and Italy as an airplane mechanic. Years later, Bud enjoyed seeing his old buddies at numerous reunions. After the war, Bud returned to Laurens where he met and married Marvella (Ralle). He graduated from Iowa State and took a teaching job in Vista, CA. Here they settled, raising their son Alan and daughter Nancy. The summers were spent traveling around the country in their trailer. It was on one of these trips they found a paradise on Vancouver Island, Canada. After teaching woodshop 26 years, the moved to Sidney, B.C. where they spent 15 glorious years with good friends and great fishing.
In 1993 they moved to Lompoc to be closer to their daughter and family. Bud was a masterful woodworker and avid gardener. He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and an enthusiastic follower of Lakers Basketball.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Marvella (Tobi), son Alan of Mexico, daughter Nancy (Steve) Schuler-Jones of Lompoc, grandchildren Hillary Schuler-Jones of San Jose, and Daniel Schuler-Jones of San Luis Obispo, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers.
Bud's family would like to thank Dr. Bailey and Bonnie of Valley Medical Group, and the staff at Lompoc Artificial Kidney Center for their extra kindness and care during these last few months.
A memorial service will be held Nov. 1, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at Lompoc First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Lompoc First United Methodist Church Endowment Fund.
