Robert P. Sutton, Jr. Born on January 26th, 1934, was born in Jackson, MS, the Son of the Late Robert P. Sutton, Sr., and Ella Brown Sutton. He is preceded in death by his First Wife, Irma L. Sutton, his siblings: Mary (Suzy) Carter, Rosa Sutton, Earl Sutton, Anne Sutton, Betty Sutton, and Charles Sutton.
Robert went home to be with the Lord on March 12th, 2026, at Cottage Hospital, Santa Barbara, California, surrounded by his family, pastors, and Friends. Robert was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Robert was raised Catholic and attended Holy Ghost High, graduated in 1955, and joined the United States Air Force on June 1st, 1956, and traveled to many countries. In the late 60’s, Robert and Irma moved to Riverside, CA, and raised their family. Committed to raising the children in the fear and admonition of the Lord, Robert enrolled them in Saint Thomas Catholic School in Riverside, CA. He eventually transferred to Vandenberg Air Force Base in Lompoc, CA. However, rather than uprooting his family, he chose to commute weekly between Lompoc and Riverside. Robert served in the Air Force for 20 years and 5 months. Retiring at Vandenberg on 01/31/1972. After he retired from the Military, Robert continued his education, graduating from Riverside City College with an AA Degree in 06/18/1974, and went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University, San Bernardino, CA, in 06/11/1976. Robert worked many jobs while attending College and after graduation, he was employed by Orange County Housing Authority, Santa Ana, California, until 1979. When he met and married his loving Wife Bettye, on November 3rd, 1979, in Riverside, California. Robert, Bettye, and the children moved to Lompoc, California, in January 1981, where we made our home in Vandenberg Village.
Robert started working for the County of Santa Barbara Housing Authority, Lompoc, in 1982 and retired on 01/01/2000.
Robert became a Member of Grace Temple Missionary Baptist Church, Lompoc, CA, in the 1980’s, where he served as Assistant Treasurer, Trustee, Chairman of the Trustees, and Men’s Department until 12/21/2025, and until his illness.
Passionate about being part of the solution, Robert was well known for his letter writing to the Editor and always voiced his concerns and opinions. He was also a very good cook and loved being with his family at Thanksgiving, his favorite Holiday. He enjoyed reading, doing word searches, and traveling.
Robert will forever be remembered by his loving Wife Bettye, and Sons: Robert P. Sutton, III, Atlanta, Ga., Ronald P. (Deidra) Sutton, Lompoc, CA. Roderick P. Sutton, and Renderick P. Sutton, Valencia, CA. And Family Daughters Dianne Alexander, Kentucky, and Karina Giron. Santa Barbara, CA.
Grandchildren: Pierre (Jasmine) Sutton, Malcolm Sutton, Jason Sutton, Christina Sutton, and Elijah (Krystal) Sutton. Great-grandchildren: Jordan Sutton, Laila Rose Sutton, and Kalia Sutton. Additionally, a host of nieces and nephews, and family friends.
