Roy M. Viele
1924 – 2009
To Gertrude Mae and John Hyde Viele, on November 22, 1924, their son Roy was born. Roy was the youngest of 12 children; five sisters and six brothers, all deceased now. He graduated from Elmira Free Academy in 1942.
In 1943 he joined the U.S. Navy from which he retired in 1974 as a Senior Chief Operatios Specialist. He served on eleven ships and had two tours of shore duty at Treasure Island in San Francisco. His Military awards were the Presidential Unit Citation, the good Conduct, European Theater two battle stars, South Pacific Theater three Battle Stars, Korean War two Battle Stars and was taken prisoner for 96 days just north of the 40th parallel.
He had many interests in his life, dancing, music, playing many instruments, and was a member of the Late Bloomers Band of the Half Century Club for over 20 years.
A memorial service and pot luck will be at 1:00pm, held at the Half Century Club located at 341 North "N" St Lompoc, CA 93436.
