IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ruby Ellen
Johnson
August 16, 1931 – January 26, 2022
Ruby Ellen Johnson passed away peacefully on January 27, 2022 surrounded by her loving family.
Ruby, one of seven daughters, was born in Greenville, South Carolina on August 16, 1931 to Ambrose and Ollie Neas. The family settled in Lompoc in the late 1940s when Ambrose took a job at Grefco. Ruby and her family appreciated life in Lompoc attending church and enjoying picnics with family, neighbors, and friends.
Ruby had a wonderful sense of humor which served her well in her careers in customer service. For over 50 years Ruby worked as a waitress and bartender at Andersen's Pea Soup and other fine restaurants in Solvang. Ruby took pride in her work ethic and in her ability to make people laugh. Beautiful Ruby, with her southern accent, quick wit, and charm could pull a smile out of anyone.
Ruby was a devoted mother to her five children and relished in her role as a grandmother and great-grandmother.
Ruby was also a fighter, surviving cancer in her 50s and then participating in several cancer walks to help raise awareness of and money for cancer.
Ruby was a devout Christian and attended the North Avenue Baptist Church where she participated in many activities and one, most dear to her heart, was to help cook for and feed the homeless. She especially enjoyed time spent with Pastor Bob & Joey, Dale Johnson, and her good friend Bobbi.
In her 80s Ruby suffered a minor stroke. Her wonderful family rallied around her and with her strong will and determination Ruby made an incredible recovery. It was at this time that her eldest son, Terry, lived with her and with the support of her other children and grandchildren Ruby was able to remain at home.
When her care needs became too great, Ruby went to live at the Comprehensive Care Center (CCC) where she made many friends with the residents and staff. Ruby also enjoyed playing bingo and participating in the arts and crafts.
Ruby will forever be remembered for her enormous heart, generosity, and beautiful blue eyes.
The family would like to give special thanks to the CCC Healthcare Professionals and Activities Team for their kindness, compassion, and exceptional care.
Ruby is preceded in death by her son, Terry Cobb, and sisters Ivalee Neas, Evelyn Brown, Gladys Neas, and Bobbie Clark.
