Obituary

Sally was born on November 9, 1924, to Rosemary Long and Thomas J Flattery in Detroit, Michigan.  Sally and her four siblings grew up in Detroit and its suburbs.  One of her fondest memories from childhood is of her dog Skippy, a terrier mix.  Sally had several other dogs throughout her life naming many of them Skippy.  She attended Dominican High School and made lifelong friends she continued to visit annually in her retirement.  They called themselves "The Ajax Girls" because as their families grew, they would get together and eventually get to the subject of laundry soap.

Sally met Henry Walter O'Malley in Grosse Pointe, Michigan while he was playing tennis.  They married on June 19, 1948.  Walter became an FBI agent which required them to move to Knoxville, Tennessee and then on to Arlington, Virginia.  Sally wanted to go back to Grosse Pointe so Walter retired from the FBI and they returned to Michigan.  They returned to Michigan with their four children.  Walter worked in Industrial Security while Sally cared for their growing family.  In 1962, Walter accepted a position with North American Aviation in California.  In February they loaded up their now eight children in the station wagon and drove across country from the snows of Michigan to the land of orange groves in Buena Park.

In California they added two more children to the family for a final total of ten children.  Sally went to work full time when their youngest child reached the age of three.  She worked at several jobs but eventually became a legal secretary at the JC Penney regional headquarters in Buena Park.

In 1987, Walter and Sally now retired moved to Lompoc.  Sally became very involved in the Queen of Angels Catholic Church.  She led their craft group and was secretary in the church council.  She also enjoyed gardening keeping most of her plants inside a gated patio to keep the deer from eating them.  Sally made her family the center of her life.  She loved all her children and grandchildren to visit her in Lompoc.  She never missed a birthday by sending a homemade card with a $5 bill.

Walter died in 1994, and Sally continued to live in Lompoc until 2005, when Alzheimer's required a move to Southern California.  There she lived in assisted living with frequent visits from her four children who lived nearby.  Alzheimer's can change a person's personality, but it never did for Sally.  She remained a kind and loving person to the end.  She is survived by her ten children Daniel (Robin) O'Malley, James (Michele) O'Malley,  Sara (James) Bass, Terence (Teresa) O'Malley, William (Kathy) O'Malley, Patricia O'Malley, Thomas (Kathy) O'Malley, Mary Stephens, Michael (Dana) O'Malley, and Grace (Mark) Hickey, as well as 19 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by her husband Walter and her siblings Thomas Flattery, Patricia Hurley, Suzanne Sherman, and Jack Flattery.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
