IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sharon Slater
Frey
January 4, 1953 – May 4, 2021
Sharon would like her friends and family to know that her work here on Earth is done. After several phone calls (that she couldn't hear) and attempted voicemails (that couldn't be left because her mailbox was full) she received a text message for an appointment that she could not cancel. It said "it's time to go". Now to be honest, we all know Sharon was a procrastinator. That first text came about 4 years ago. But this last one could not be rescheduled or ignored.
Sharon fought a COURAGEOUS 4 year battle with Primary Peritoneal Cancer. She knew her odds but did not accept what they were. So she decided to stick around an extra 2 years. She passed away on May 4, 2021.
Sharon was born and raised in Lompoc and graduated from Lompoc High School in 1971. She was an honors student who participated in Choir and may or may not have POSSIBLY stolen a bag of peas, so her Brother Jimmy says.
In 1975, Sharon married Ron Gaylord. From that union, Sharon gave birth to her precious daughter and "Legend" Jessica. Alas, all good things can come to an end. But she got the most important thing in her life from it. *Full Disclosure* As much as she loved Jessica, there were many times over the years, especially the teenage ones, that she wasn't sure either one of them were going to make it out alive!
Sharon was a bartender for over 20 years. She worked as a waitress at Toms Hamburgers, a job that she absolutely loved. She also worked at Allan Hancock as an EOPS officer, Chapman University in the office, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and for the County of Santa Barbara Sheriff's department. She volunteered at Relay for Life, Empty Bowls, Toys for Tots, raffle tickets/candy for youth sports and any other local fundraiser she could. Actually, Sharon usually had 2-3 jobs because "well, why not?".
In 1993 Sharon went back to school and received her AA from Allan Hancock. She then transferred to Chapman University where she received her Bachelor's Degree and Masters Degree in Sociology. Up until recently, she was considering going back for her doctorate "just because". She taught Sociology at Allan Hancock as one of her "other" jobs which she loved.
In 1980, she met and fell in love with Kenny Frey, Along with Kenny, she gained a bonus daughter Laura and a bonus son Jeff. She loved them as if they were her own. They made their union official when they were married on June 11, 1983 at Miguelito Park.
For the next 30 years they lived their lives side by side. Through Kenny's heart problems that led to a heart transplant, health when he was finally healthy again. Watching Kyle and then Vanessa being born, grandkids, great grandkids, graduations, weddings and all the things married couples do.
Sharon was diagnosed with cancer in March of 2017. She continued to work through as much of her treatment as she could. She was a stubborn ol' goat but she loved her job and didn't want to sit at home and feel sorry for herself. She was also one of the smartest and most caring people that you could ever meet. She loved her family above all and would drop everything for a friend in need. She also tried to live her life being kind and doing the right thing. But if you knew Sharon, she lacked a filter and most often gave her honest, yet sometimes brutal, opinion when asked. (And sometimes when not asked!) If you knew Sharon, you understood that was just how she was. She didn't mean any harm or to cause any pain. She was just an honest person who honestly didn't think before she spoke sometimes….but that was part of what people loved most about her.
Sharon's heart, front door, phone and home were always open to anyone who needed it. Because of this, she had many adopted children that she lovingly called her "rent-a-kids". Once she rented you, it was a contract for life. She was everyone's ride or die! She was always willing and ready to go anywhere! Whether to Ross, Harbor Freight with her son in law Hector, Walmart with her Duchess and Jorge, wine tasting, Bingo with Alicia, the Casino, or her favorite, a Thelma and Louise trip with her Wifey Paula.
Sharon is preceded in death by her husband Kenny, both of her parents, her brother Brad, her sister in law Glenda, her bonus son Jeff, her other bonus son Ronnie Menezes, her nephew Marc, her niece Ashley and her fiance Dale and her grandson Anakin. There were many other friends, family and fur babies...All of which were waiting for her arrival.
Since Sharon is no longer here to "run things" she leaves behind her daughter, "The Legend" Jessica Flores and her husband Hector (aka Rudy). Her Bonus daughter Laura and her husband Martin, her brother James Slater, her sister in law Yvonne, her niece Dawn VanSlyke and husband Roland and her niece Jennifer.
She also leaves behind her grandchildren Kyle Robinson (aka her Puppy), Vanessa Alvarez (The Duchess) Sabrina and Sierra Flores, Justin Frey, Chris, Leanna, Kellie and Bryan Harrington. Her great grandchildren or her mini puppies Roman and Bodhi Robinson. Dominic, Madison, David Frey. Tristen, Revyn and Remi Harrington. Anthony, Andrew and Airyanna Patino.
Sharon believed that family didn't just mean blood. So she also leaves her extended family, her "Wifey" Paula Armero, Her Brother Mike Smith, Her Sister Susi and Les "Flako" Schuyler, Kayanne Edmonds, Susanne Boyer, David Boslough, Cindy and Terry Pruitt and Marilyn O'Malley.
Remember those rent-a-kids? Cassie Ashley, Cristi Montgomery, Kristina Willimson, Sara Andrade, Brandi Delira, Christina Killelea, Karie Ruiz and Monica Figueroa. She also acquired some rent-a-grandkids, Cheeno Canchola, Jorge Pantoja, Rhiena Oliveira, Jenna Twomey, and Mckenna Wink.
Our family would like to express our love and appreciation to Dr Mark Abate at The Ridley Tree Cancer Center in Santa Barbara. We met him almost 13 years ago when Jessica was first diagnosed. Then 5 years later when Kenny was diagnosed and 4 years ago when Sharon was diagnosed. He is extremely kind and compassionate and lucky for him, still stuck with the "Legend" Jessica every 4 months for the rest of both of their lives. Thank you Dr Abate. You will never know how much you mean to our family or what you have given us. Thank you to Veronica, his assistant, for always going above and beyond for all of her patients. You are truly an angel here on Earth.
To Assisted Living Hospice care, thank you Leslie, Cici and Heather. Leslie you made this difficult time a tad easier just by being you. Cici you are the BEST!!! She loved talking to you and she always felt so much better. But who is going to give you your snack and squirt now?
To all of Sharon's family and friends, thank you all for the love and support you have always given her. It never went unnoticed and it was always appreciated. Thank you Alicia for coming everyday, Nancy for all your help with everything, and to Donna and Karen. A special thank you to Susanne Boyer, The "Legend's" namesake, for your constant emotional, physical and spiritual support. ]
Kelly at Starbuck Lind, we didn't meet in the best of circumstances but you are an amazing human being. This "Legend" could not have gotten through this without you. Thank you for your kindness, love and compassion taking care of my Mama. You will always have a special place in our hearts.
In lieu of flowers, we respectfully ask that a gift be made in Memory of Sharon Frey to: The Ridley Tree Cancer Center 601 W Junipero St, Santa Barbara CA, 93105. Gifts may also be made online at: www.cfsb.org
There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday June 5, 2021 at 1pm. Please wear your favorite Skull shirt as she loved skulls and BLING!!! Per Sharon's request we will bbq, jello shots and a celebratory shot of tequila. Please feel free to bring a dish to share. Please contact Jessica or Susi Schuyler for the location.
