Shirley Mae Mitchell "Mama Shirley" of Lompoc, our beloved mother, daughter, sister, grandmother and great grandmother was born August 10, 1939 in Rosman, NC and passed away March 13, 2015 at Marian Medical in Santa Maria at the age of 75. Shirley married Robert Mitchell on March 23, 1957 in GA. and later moved to Lompoc in 1961. Together they had seven children; Eddie, Deborah, Judy, Mike, and Pam all of Lompoc, Diane of FL and Angela of UT. After the sudden passing of Robert in 1971, Shirley became a single mother and devoted her life to her children. She never remarried. Shirley worked as a cook for the Solvang Lutheran Home and retired after 23 years as Head Cook in 2004. Cooking, gardening, home improvement projects, and spending time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren and shopping were some of her hobbies.
"Mama Shirley" was a nickname given to her because she touched so many people with her nurturing ways and her compassion for others. All who knew her loved and admired her. She will be greatly missed.
Survivors include seven children, 11 grandchildren, five great grandchildren all of Lompoc, one grandchild of Utah; brothers Ray Hendrix of CA, Allan, Keith, Don and John; sisters Martha and Linda Fisher all of Brevard, N.C. She is preceded in death by husband Robert Mitchell, mother Madge Fisher and sister Laura Fisher.
