Sophie (Wallace) Green passed away after more than a century of beautiful life. She was born in Vienna, Texas on November 17, 1904 to Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin (Ben) Wallace of Shiner, Texas, the second of three children and was the last surviving child of this umon.
Sophie was preceded in death by her father, Ben (August, 1916), her sister, Leon Wallace Kuykendall (July 1927), her mother, Minnie Russell (April, 1963) and her brother James (Buster) Wallace (January, 1968).
Sophie Wallace was united in Holy Matrimony with Joseph M. Green in October 31, 1923. To this union was born one child, Joseph Ellis Green who preceded his mother and father in death in September of 1948. Sophie's loving husband, "Joe" passed away in April of 1991.
Sophie accepted Christ at the age of fifteen and her faith never wavered. She was a member of the Johnson Chapel Methodist Church until 1955 when she transferred to the Church of God at Hallettsville, Texas where she was a faithful member until poor health curtailed her active participation. She moved to Lompoc, California in 1991 to be near her niece, Marion Linton and great-nephew, Ronald Linton, where she lived until her death.
Sophie Green leaves a rich legacy as a faithful Christian, an active leader of her contemporary African-American community in Shiner, Texas, and a cornerstone of her immediate and extended family. She was the recognized authority on the history of her lineage and provided personal remembrances for a study of her family. The details that she provided led to the discovery that her ancestors were in the Colonies during the American Revolutionary War and fought in that war for their freedom from slavery, in the British forces.
Her surviving family is deeply grateful to this unsung American who helped to define who we are. Mourning her passing is niece, Marion Linton; great-nephew and wife, Ronald and Ginny Linton; great-great-niece, Katrina Sophia Linton, and three generations of many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held later at Johnson Chapel Methodist Church in Shiner, Texas with burial following at Blue Bonnet Hill Cemetery in Shiner.
Local arrangements are in the care of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary.
