Obituary

Stanley William (Bill) Haney Jr. August 14, 1931 – September 4, 2011

Bill, born August 14, 1931 in Berlin, New Hampshire, was the first of seven children born to Stanley W. Haney and Alice Arsenault Haney. The family later moved to Boston where Bill attended local schools.

He joined the US Coast Guard at the age of 17 and proudly served for twenty years at Base Boston, Argencia, Newfoundland, Washington, DC, St Petersburg, FL and Alameda, CA. He also served several short tours on training ships assigned from Alaska to Mexico. Bill loved to share Coast Guard stories with everyone around him and was a member of the Bering Sea Patrol Group.

Upon retiring from the Coast Guard, he joined the staff of the University of Massachusetts and was part of the team that built the Boston Campus. He was the Material and Purchasing Manager of the new campus and was instrumental in starting the Massachusetts Higher Education Consortium (MHEC). In 1982 he took a similar position with the University of California Santa Barbara and permanently relocated to California; later retiring from UCSB.

He received his BS degree in Management from the University of Massachusetts Lowell and his MBA from Suffolk University in Boston. He also held a lifetime CPM designation.

Bill's Irish sense of humor and love of family, friends and country will be missed. His children and grandchildren will especially remember his mantra of 'try to get along". He was a great Red Sox fan and rarely missed watching a game.

Bill was a long time member of Our Lady of the Stars parish at Vandenberg Air Force Base.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00pm, including a rosary at 6:30 pm, on Sunday evening September 11 at Starbuck-Lind Mortuary in Lompoc. A funeral Mass will be held on Monday September 12, 2011 at 1:00 pm at Chapel One on Vandenberg Air Force Base.*

Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Maralynn, his sons Michael W. Haney of Herndon, VA and David A. Haney of Ottawa, Canada, his stepsons Robert E. Potts Jr. (Julia) of Chattanooga, TN, Daniel W. Potts (Jennifer) of Westboro, Ma., Jeffery J. Potts (Pamela) of Brentwood, Ca. and James H. Potts of Captain Cook HI., his siblings Mildred Phillips (Bobby) of Uxbridge, Ma., Susan Sylvia (Frank) of Nashua NH., Linda Rainville (James) of Columbia NH and James Haney of Falmouth, MA. and his sister in law Brenda Haney of Burlington, MA.
