Stephen "Steve" Schuyler died in his home on Wednesday, September 7, 2016, after a brief struggle with mesothelioma. He was 67.
Steve was born March 9, 1949 in Lompoc to Vernon and Marian Schuyler. He joined the US Navy after graduating Lompoc High School in 1967. Steve married JoAnne Mendez in 1971. Steve and JoAnne were stationed in California, Italy, Maine, and Illinois. In 1978, he left the Navy as a Senior Fire Control Technician after 10 years of service. Steve and JoAnne then chose to return home to Lompoc where JoAnne worked as a nursing assistant at Lompoc Hospital and Steve worked at Vandenberg Tracking Station until he retired in 2015 after 38 years.
Steve and JoAnne often traveled between their homes in Lompoc and Worden, Oregon. Steve was an avid reader of science and military fiction, and was rarely seen without a book or magazine close at hand. He was a long-time member of the NRA and an active member of the online Classic Camp Stove forum. Steve enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, and camping and took many trips to Baja California to camp and fish. In his later years, he cultivated an interest in cooking, often attending culinary shows with JoAnne.
Steve is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, JoAnne; his son and daughter-in-law Michael and Renee Schuyler of Bakersfield; his daughter and son-in-law Jennifer Schuyler and Ken Carlile of Sterling, Virginia; grandchildren Cameren Schuyler, Gabriel Schuyler, Nicole Schuyler, Elliott Carlile, Evie Carlile, and Miles Carlile; his brother and sister-in-law Lester and Sue Schuyler; his sister Roxanne Schuyler; and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents Vernon Schuyler and Marian Schuyler; and his granddaughter Samantha Carlile.
A visitation will be held at Starbuck-Lind Mortuary on September 17, 2016 at 11am, followed by a potluck reception at noon at La Purisima Mission State Historic Park. All are welcome to attend.
