There are so many ways in which Susan Ann Russell was exceptional, and that is why our hearts are saddened by her loss. She lost her year-long battle with cancer on Sunday, May 10.
Sue was a devoted mother, grandmother and sister. She is survived by her children Eric Russell, Aimee Tigler and Ashley Russell as well as her siblings Lee Avillanoza and Ed Gauthier. Her pride and joy were her grandchildren Isaiah, Alyssa, Gavin and Otis. She loved them all dearly, was involved in their lives and always supportive of their aspirations.
Susan also had a huge family of friends, each of whom felt a special bond with her. She truly cared about the lives of others, and all were fortunate to have her in their lives. She loved to laugh, drink wine, play slots in Vegas and go on cruises. Above all she loved spending time with her grandchildren. All who knew her knew that nothing made her happier than being with them.
She was born July 3, 1948 in Gardner, Massachusetts to Robert and Barbara Gauthier. She was in the 1966 graduating class of Narragansett High school and went on to get her LVN at Gardner State Hospital. In her first years of nursing, she met Charles A. Russell and they were married in 1968. Together they moved to Santa Barbara to start a family.
In 1978 the family moved to Lompoc where Susan started working for the Convalescent Care center. It was here that she spent the next 35 years of her career until she retired in 2013. She was devoted and gifted caregiver and believed strongly in providing the residents a high quality of life. She loved her coworkers dearly and thought of them as a second family.
She will be remembered as a strong, compassionate and giving woman who brought joy and laughter to those around her. She always put others before herself and went above and beyond for her family and friends. Her beautiful smile and infectious laughter will truly be missed. A special thank you to the staff at Lompoc Valley Medical Center and friends who were there for her in her final months.
Celebration of Life services will be held in Starbuck-Lind Mortuary on May 15, 2015 at 3:30 pm.
