Services will be held at 2:00 PM in the chapel at Los Osos Memorial Park for Thomas Burton, DVM, 82, of Lompoc who passed away Tuesday at Lompoc Valley Hospital following a brief illness. Pastors Wallis Turner and Jeff Devine will officiate.
Dr. Burton was born in Morgan, Utah, on February 8, 1925, the youngest of six children. He was reared in Morgan and graduated from the Morgan High School in 1943. He was a veteran of WWII, having enlisted in the Army in 1943 and serving with the Army Service Command Unit until his honorable discharge in 1946, at which time he took up his residency in the State of California.
Dr. Burton received the Associate of Arts Degree in 1951 from the Ventura Junior College and the Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of California at Davis in 1953. In 1957 he graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine at Davis as Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.
In 1958 Dr. Burton established the Lompoc Veterinary Clinic, where he practiced small-animal medicine until his retirement in 1996. He was a lifetime member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and past-president of the Tri-Valley Veterinary Medical Association.
Dr. Burton was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, having accepted Christ as his personal Savior on October 6, 1968. An active leader in Scouting, he was awarded The Good Shepherd Cross and Staff by the Boy Scouts of America for his distinguished service in furthering the spiritual, physical, mental and moral development of the youth of Lompoc Valley.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Carol V. Burton of Lompoc; daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and Philip Robertson of Altamonte Springs, Florida; daughter Diane Heath of Bend, Oregon; son and daughter-in-law Thomas and Norma Burton of Davis, California; son, James Burton of West Sacramento, California; and five grandchildren: Phyllis Hunsucker, Leetra Robertson, Alexis Heath, Leslie Burton and Tab Burton and three great-grandchildren: Jaan Hunsucker, Raia Hunsucker, and Anastasiya Hunsucker.
He was preceded in death by his two sisters and three brothers.
