Obituary

Tony Alves Bettencourt of Lompoc passed away Thursday, September 17, 2015, at the age of 92.

Tony was born June 26, 1923, in Lemoore, California to Joe and Maria Bettencourt. He began working in the dairies at a young age and later worked for many years with Madonna Construction in San Luis Obispo retiring as a Highway Construction Superintendent. A resident of Lompoc since 1970, he owned and operated Bettencourt Yard Service for several years following his retirement.

Tony was a member of the Caballeros de San Luis Obispo, Moose Lodge #1036 and the Elks Lodge #2274 where he headed many services projects including the mural displayed behind the Elks Lodge building and was recognized as Elk of the Year. He was also a member of La Purisima Concepcion Catholic Church.

Tony is survived by his wife of 43 years, Virginia Bettencourt; his daughters Mary Ann (Jim) Rapp and Patricia Bettencourt of San Luis Obispo; his sons Richard (Janet) Bettencourt of Santa Margarita and Joseph Bettencourt of San Miguel; his step-daughters Ardeane (Rodney) Eckert and Peggi (Sonny) Arnold and step-son Tony (Marilyn) Machado, Jr. all of Lompoc; his grandchildren Jody, Susan, Jimmie Lynn, Kim, Tony III, Kandi and Francine; thirteen great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, two brothers and his grandson Christopher.

The visitation will be from 4-6 pm on Wednesday, September 23rd in the chapel of the Starbuck-Lind Mortuary; followed by rosary/vigil at 6pm. Father Tom Cook will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, September 24th, at 10am at La Purisima Concepcion Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery.
