VERNIECE F. BAKUN
Verniece F. Bakun, age 79 of Lompoc, passed away at her home on January 21, 2008. She was born in a log cabin on May 22, 1928 in Van, Kentucky to Willie and Sophie Caudill.
Verniece graduated from Lee Junior College in Kentucky and began her career as an educator. She taught eight grades simultaneously; grades kindergarten through eighth grade, in a one-room school. Later in life, she served our country in the United States Air Force, where she met the love of her life, Albert Joseph Bakun. She served in the Korean War, and was always very proud to be a veteran.
She was a member of DAV, Sergeant's Association, and was proud to be part of the Women's Air Force Memorial in Washington, DC. She was a woman of many talents. She excelled in basketball, bowling, and construction. She even built a home in Premium, Kentucky with her father Willie. Finally, Verniece was a very religious woman and a parishioner of Queen of Angels Catholic Church.
Verniece is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Albert Joseph Bakun of Lompoc, son Michael Joseph Bakun of Lompoc, twin sister Virginia Maye Frazier of Cocoa, Florida, sister Zola P. Ratliff of Premium, Kentucky, brother Laurell Caudill of Chicago, Illinois, and her loving caregiver Gaby Nava.
A graveside service with military honors will be held for Verniece on Thursday, January 31, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at San Joaquin National Cemetery in Gustine, California. Father Leonard Trinidad of Our Lady of Miracles will officiate.
