Walter Benjamin Day passed away peacefully, on Monday, September 4th at the age of 89 with his family at his side. He was born on March 25, 1934. Walter was the eldest of 13 children born to Mamie Lou and Walter Nathaniel Day in McRae Georgia. His early years were spent traveling with his family to different states to work in the fields harvesting vegetables. His family finally settled in Vidalia Georgia where he met his childhood sweetheart, Lola Johnson. After graduating from Dickerson Training School, he joined the United States Air Force. He and Lola married on July 31, 1953, and had a family of 4 children. Walter, a Korean vet was also assigned to Vandenberg Air Force Base in California in 1958, where he later retired in 1977. Walter worked for Federal Electric Corporation for 3 years and Martin Marrieta for 8 years before retiring in 1989. One of his hobbies was working in his flower garden. His favorite flowers were roses and gladiolas. He was also an amateur photographer taking many photos of his flowers.
Walter is survived by his wife Lola, his sons, Terrell (Loni) Carl, Eric (Diana), and daughter Deborah Robinson (Leon), 8 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, 6 siblings; Willa Jean Baptiste of Nantucket, MA, Yvonne Nixon (Gary) of Augusta, GA, Mae Lois Day, Bernice Goode of Vidalia, GA, Rogers Day (Betty) of Albany, GA, Leon Day of Vidalia, GA and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mamie, and his brothers, Moses, John, James, Charles, and Harvey, and sister Dorothy Williams.
A viewing will be held Friday evening September 15th, 5-7 pm at Starbuck-Lind Mortuary and a memorial service will be held Saturday, September 16th, 11 am at Valley of the Flowers United Church of Christ 3346 Constellation Rd.
