Wilda passed away November 21st, peacefully with her family and adopted family Lupe, at her side. She fought a courageous battle with Alzheimer's, and recently a bad infection which hospitalized her and led to her death.
Wilda was born and raised in Lost Creek, West Virginia. She attended nurses training before moving to California during WW II. After the war, she met the man of her dreams at a ballroom dance in Huntington Park, married and spent 60 wonderful years with him. They settled in South Gate, California where they raised their daughter Janice and lived happily until 1992. Janice then convinced her parents that Lompoc was a great place to live. They have lived here ever since. Wilda and her husband Harlan both loved to dance and joined the Cotillion Club, the Half Century Club and attended many dances and senior center activities on the central coast.
Wilda worked tirelessly at Janice's schools, elementary through high school for the PTA. She was honored with the PTA's Lifetime Achievement Award. Wilda was active at St. John's Presbyterian Church in Compton. She was on the Deacons Board. Her favorite job was coordinating members to provide food during times of bereavement to other members and their families.
Wilda loved people and even strangers seemed to be her friends. She was kind, caring, and never carried a grudge. Her hobbies were sewing, cooking, and gardening. She always talked about the two happiest days of her life. The first was the day she married her husband Harlan, and the second was God's blessing of her first and only child at the age of 40, Janice. However, the greatest thing in her life occurred at age 80 with the birth of her beautiful granddaughter Dana. Wilda was very proud of Dana's accomplishments, and recently commented on what a beautiful young lady she was becoming.
Wilda is survived by her husband Harlan; daughter, Janice and her husband Ben Hjelm; granddaughter, Dana Hjelm; and brother, Henry Dawson of Parkersburg,, West Virginia. She was preceded in death by her brother, Ralph Dawson and granddaughter, Katie Hjelm who she will be buried next to at the Lompoc Cemetery.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church in Vandenberg Village.
